My Ranger Runs! The Cat was clogged, so I cut it about 1/4 of the way off (AKA I cut it till I broke my grinder disk). Now she sounds like fart, but she runs! I’m probably gonna take it to an exhaust shop next week to install a new cat and replace my Glasspack with a Flowmaster 44.

Kinja'd!!!

I have a couple theories as to why my cat failed...

1) MY PCV was supposed to be replaced at 120k miles or earlier...... Yeahhhhhh, that never happened

2) My glasspack got too hot

Either way; she runs, Im happy, the world is good

Why bother replacing the cat converter? I just cut mine down the side, poked all the crap out with a screwdriver and had it welded back up along the seam. Passes visual inspection but cat has no guts at all any more.

Cuz Driving it with no cat gives it no backpressure. It drives like its towing a boat anchor

That’s not how any of that works.

This. Did this to my XJ until some dumbass sawsall’d it off in a parking lot, then I welded in a straight pipe and still passed inspection.

Back pressure caused by the exhaust system (consisting of the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, muffler and connecting pipes) of an automotive four-stroke engine has a negative effect on engine efficiency resulting in a decrease of power output that must be compensated by increasing fuel consumption.

Yeah, and less backpressure doesn’t result in less power in 99.9999999% of cases unless you have some LEGENDARY scavenging setup with custom headers.

If he is in an area that does emissions testing he might be fucked.

Some places just do a plug-in test for 1996+ OBDII systems which is great- as long as you pass visual you are good to go.

But his is a 1992 (right?), so it might get a tailpipe or dyno test, which he’d probably fail with a gutted cat.

I’d confirm that the cat needs replacement by running the truck with no cat (if possible) and then get a universal replacement.

I love my Flowmaster Super 44's on the Montego.

Loud as hell

Regardless of what concepts of exhaust theory you believe, in order to register a light duty truck in the state of Colorado, it has to have less than 25% CO in the exhaust. So to pass emissions and keep my license plate, I need a cat

I’m not arguing against a cat. Cars without cats are friggin’ miserable, I’m just saying your theory on why your car runs better with an exhaust restriction is wrong. There’s a chance what is happening is the backpressure is confusing your o2 sensor and making your computer deliver different fueling than what is actually called for, which could increase power some at the expense of engine life (because it would be running too lean or rich).

Grab a high-flow cat off of Summit Racing and you should be good to go.

Its a 93, yes colorado does a dyno test for emmissions, and an OEM replacement cat is $175 on RockAuto

I was going to recommend a Magnaflow bullet and performance muffler for that price, but looked it up.

What’s up with that dual-cat setup? Strange.

I dunno, Ford is weird. I stopped asking questions after I did my shocks, it had a 3/4" bolt on the bottom and a 14mm bolt on the top

I did it about 5 years ago and it hasn’t given me any issues. I actually started getting slightly better fuel mileage too.

yes but now you pollute all sorts of shit. Would you mind if I empty my septic tank in your back yard? it would help my toilet flush better.

It bothers me none. Modern cars are pretty hard to take the emissions gear off but older cars were designed to run without it and then had it retrofitted in to meet regulations. The emissions gear causes lean running, poor mileage and reduces power. Most of my cars are old enough that they never even came with emissions gear. It’s amazing how clean modern cars run, really. It’s just not the stuff I own.

If they do a sniff test, that’s a true bummer. But if its just a visual inspection and OBD2 scan, then it’s pretty easily circumvented. But if cats are just $175, that would be the best option. My cost for new cats was like $700 per unit and I needed two.

Pre-OBDII so it gets sniffed. Hell, it’s been a while but I think they sniff OBDII cars here too.

That being said, my bud had a 1994 Ram 1500 with gutted cats and it passed emissions. Who knows ‘round here

I love it when people get so pissy about how you aren’t saving the earth like them by driving around in an unreliable luxury car.

What no one’s going to tell you: if the environment is not fucked beyond repair, it will be soon*

What I’m going to tell you: Screw catalytic converters on cars that shouldn’t have catalytic converters.

*And even on the off chance that China and India wake up and decide to be halfway sustainable, Africa is just getting started. A vote for Asia trade agreements is a vote for more unregulated manufacturing and coal burning, and a vote against them is a vote for climate change deniers. We’re in denial as much as we’re in a catch-22 here!

pcv’s should be replaced every 10-15k or so. they’re like $2 so it doesnt hurt to change em that often. but what i dont get is how a clogged cat can cause you to have low compression on all 6 cylinders
